When you have a partner in life whose passion is real estate, it can become addictive. Seth Hammerly’s exacting military background became useful when joining his veteran Realtor wife, Sunny, in the Residential Real Estate business.

With an eye for detail and a background as a software analyst and troubleshooter in the military, Seth became Sunny’s quintessential detail man, at first helping her with administrative work so she could get out of the office more consistently, and then earning his real estate license to become the tag-team “Sunny and Seth” duo known throughout the northern Virginia area. Initial property and final walk-through inspections are his specialties. “I make it a point to catch things others might miss. When we represent buyers and a defect is discovered in their home-to-be, it’s really about doing damage control – keeping the communication and sometimes the negotiations going so that the transaction can go forward to settlement.”

Hammerly likes to recall his life as a “military brat”, having lived most of his life on the west coast but also having traveled all over the world with his family in addition to during his own career. His love of Northern Virginia is due in part because of its proximity to so many world-class metropolitan areas. “How great is it when you realize you can spend a weekend in cities like Washington, D.C., New York City, Baltimore or Pittsburgh – all within a few hours’ driving distance of home? It’s understandable why people love living here. It’s like living in the country with some of the nation’s most interesting cities all around you,” he says.

Hammerly holds great admiration for his wife’s formidable real estate skills. He loves being able to help her with the tasks that take her away from those at which she feels most adept. “We are a great little tag-team,” he admits. “We love working together and we love how what we do touches people's’ lives.” Sunny and Seth make up a team that has few equals in the northern Virginia area.

There is no doubt about it. Real estate is in Sunny Hammerly’s blood. Having grown up with both parents in the industry, she saw first-hand how it offered them the opportunity to touch people’s lives. As a result, it didn’t take long before she followed in their footsteps.

Having earned her degree in Communications from George Mason University, Hammerly found the corporate world lacking in flexibility, creativity and most importantly, the ability to work directly with people – something she was passionate about doing. With a lifetime of exposure to the business, more than 25 years in the area and 15 years in the industry, she is bullish on helping buyers thru not only the process of finding a home but also helping sellers move on to the next stage of their lives. “It’s such a huge step in someone’s life,” she says. “I just want to be that person they can count on for all their real estate needs.” Hammerly’s patient, non-aggressive approach to real estate makes her not only a Realtor people can count on; it also forms bonds and friendships that can last a lifetime. A native of the area, Hammerly understands the current real estate market as well as its history. Unlike other agents who have relocated to Northern Virginia, she knows what neighborhoods have gone through and how it affects home sellers.

“When your objective is to sell a home, you have to know how to sell the area as well.” Hammerly’s outside-the-box approach to facilitating a transaction is legendary in the Northern Virginia area, where other agents respect her ability to “save” a deal using her unique ability to work through tense situations. “Sometimes it’s a matter of semantics and just keeping your cool,” she admits. “Closing the gap in negotiations when things start to go off-kilter depends on making both buyers and sellers feel comfortable with options that offer solutions.” Indeed. In these days of multiple offers and carefully worded contract addenda, a fine line defines the types of agents who can adapt to complex challenges.

Working with husband Seth as the “Sunny and Seth” team, Hammerly sees the duo as a well-oiled machine. “We are great partners. I breathe a sigh of relief when I think about how his strengths, such as property and walk-through inspections, free up my time for things like negotiations and offer preparation. "Our clients are quick to see how much value there is in working with the two of us on their side.”
